A gorgeous original pastel from Vance's Arizona period, "Ancient Antlers," owned by Tim and Margaret McGuire of Gary, Indiana. It is part of Vance's "Antlers in the Mist" series.
Tim asked whether Vance had framed the work: "The matting has some matching pastels and gold on it, and the heavy wooden frame seems so well chosen and possibly handmade. (Framed as it is, it is too heavy for my wife and me to safely move around.)The piece came from an estate in Scottsdale AZ.
And my answer: Vance did indeed mat and frame his own works in his later years (his California and Arizona periods), because he knew how important it was to get the framing right, especially since his were such large pieces which took very specialized presentation.
